Did you remember to renew your dog's license? Don't worry, you're not in the dog house, yet. You can renew online, by mail, in person at the Cuyahoga County Fiscal Officer's Office or at over 25 substations located throughout Cuyahoga County. The license fee is $20 (plus 75 cents if you purchase at a substation.) The deadline is January 31. If you miss the deadline, the late fee is equal to the cost of the license. Go to the website for all the info, FAQ and a list of substations.

I’m Ryan Giermann, a senior at Lakewood High School. I have one last requirement needed to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. I made the decision for my Eagle Scout project to help out my fellow community members. I noticed Lakewood Dog Park is a great asset to our city. It’s visited by many people not only from Lakewood, but various neighboring communities as well.
I learned from Friends of the Lakewood Dog Park that visitors to Lakewood Dog Park have requested a shelter, one that serves park visitors and can be used by Friends of Lakewood Dog Park (FLDP) and the City of Lakewood. My project will fulfill these requests while offering adequate protection against our unpredictable Northeastern Ohio climate.
The shelter will be 10ft x10ft, offering 100 square feet of protection to the visitors of the park. The shelter will be used for Friends of the Lakewood Dog Park events and will have enough space to hold 3 benches comfortably.
I’ve had a professional architect draft my plans for blueprints and have obtained several “take off” quotes for material costs.
I’ve met with Mayor Summers, City of Lakewood Director of Public Works and City of Lakewood Architectural Review Board. There’s been great support for this project and everyone is looking forward to its completion.
Construction of the shelter is planned to start during the month of November 2012. An exact date is to be determined. Contact me for more information
Want to sign up to help? There are many tasks and several shifts available.
Please email me at: ryan.giermann@yahoo.com
Would you like to help me bring this project to fruition? The cost for everything needed for the shelter (materials, supplies, tools, etc.) is $1,800.
If you or anyone you know are interested in donating money or materials to help your community neighbors visiting the dog park, your contribution will be greatly appreciated.
Your donations are tax deductible, since Friends of the Lakewood Dog Park, Inc. a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization is generously acting as the beneficiary for my project.
If you have any questions about donations, please email:

Donate in person? Stop into First Federal of Lakewood Bank and make a deposit to: Friends of the Lakewood Dog Park. Or, stop by Lakewood Dog Park on “build day”, November 11, 2012.
Interested in donating building materials, tools or supplies?
Please email me at: ryan.giermann@yahoo.com
I have a list of specified supplies for this project. Dog safety has been considered in selecting materials.
Want to help out on the construction project? Volunteers, especially people with construction skills and cordless tools, are encouraged to join in and help. I will appreciate anyone who’d like to volunteer!
Please email me at: ryan.giermann@yahoo.com
Construction of the shelter is planned for November 11, 2012.
Want to sign up to help? There are many tasks and several shifts available.
Please email me at: ryan.giermann@yahoo.com
I’m sending out donation request letters, along with personally visiting local businesses asking for donations to help raise funds for the project. I really want to get the community involved in this project. It is a requirement to me to achieve Eagle Scout rank so I hope you’ll support this project.
The City of Lakewood, Friends of the Lakewood Dog Park and dog park visitors are very excited to see the completion of the shelter and I believe that this is a great project that all of our community members can work together to see it to completion.
I look forward to your support. Thanks! - Ryan Giermann

It was discovered, Thursday, July 19th, Lakewood Dog Park and Friends of the Lakewood Dog Park equipment was struck by vandalism.
Contents of the Lost & Found Box were thrown into the trash; covered in fecal waste. Several items had significant value. No one was authorized to remove items from the Lost & Found Box.
Friends of the Lakewood Dog Park urges anyone with information about theft, vandalism or other safety issues at Lakewood Dog Park to immediately contact City of Lakewood Police at: 216-521-6773
Previous vandalism and theft, in September and October 2011, involved FLDP safety signs and promotional materials thrown into the trash under fecal waste. Some items were stolen, including a $30 literature box mounted to the fence (that's equivalent to 3 memberships @ $10). Vandalism and theft is responsible for all literature boxes and printed materials being removed to avoid further financial loss to our members and donors. So, vandals and thieves penalized dog park visitors who rely on in-park communication.
It is FLDP members, donors and sponsors that vandals and thieves are affecting. Members, donors and sponsors financially support the budget, services and equipment that Friends of the Lakewood Dog Park provides.
Theft and vandalism at the dog park has an impact on installation of new equipment for the betterment of the park and use by all dog park visitors.
Don't allow dog park vandals and thieves to destroy Friends of the Lakewood Dog Park property.
If you have any information regarding vandalism, theft, or other safety issues at Lakewood Dog Park, immediately contact City of Lakewood Police at: 216-521-6773

LATEST UPDATE:
Metropark management has informed us that the BRIDGE IS NOW RE-OPENDED. ENTER FROM DETROIT AVE., HEAD SOUTH TO DOG PARK.
*****There will be some road closures and construction tomorrow, Friday 7-13. Be on the lookout for signs and heavy construction equipment. Metropark tells us there should be access to the dog park, as road signs will be staggered.
ATTENTION DOG PARK VISITORS:
BRIDGE CLOSED COMING SOUTH FROM DETROIT AVE. IN LAKEWOOD INTO METROPARK TO LAKEWOOD DOG PARK.
USE ALTERNATE ROUTE:
Go to Wooster from the Detroid or Hilliard, turn onto Erie Cliff Dr. (by the new Joe's Deli), come down the hill into the Metropark. TURN LEFT (East/N.East) and follow Metropark Drive around to the dog park.
When we're advised by Metropark Management office of re-opening of bridge we'll let you know.
Here's the story of the car that went airborne from the Lakewood cliff and landed in the Metropark.

We want your visit to the Lakewood Dog Park to be an enjoyable experience for everyone. One reason for development of this area was to provide a space away from park playgrounds and playing fields where dogs could be free to run without disrupting families with children.
Please be aware that the fact that there are packs of dogs running around changes park dynamics. Not all dogs in the park have children in their homes. Some of them have not been exposed to kids or may even simply not like them. In the interest of keeping the Lakewood Dog Park a safe and fun place for everyone, please watch your children closely and read the following recommendations.
Children are susceptible to contracting intestinal parasites in areas where urine and feces are present. Be sure that you and your child always wear shoes in the park. Be aware that children can also pick up fleas.
This is not a place to bring a child to get over the fear of dogs. Not all dogs are friendly with children. While some dogs avoid children, others will harass them. (Note to dog owners: Whether you have children in your house or not, it is a good idea to socialize your dogs with children as much as possible. This will alleviate potential problems.)
- NEVER allow your child to approach or pet a dog without the owner’s permission and presence.
- Children are easily run over and knocked down by running dogs. Some herding breeds may nip at kids in an attempt to round them up.
- A running, yelling child attracts attention and becomes a target for dogs because s/he resembles an injured animal or running prey. Do not allow your child to wildly wave her or his arms around.
- Never let a child bring food or toys to the dog park. Even a friendly dog may go after a treat.
- One adult to supervise children and dogs is not enough. Make sure that you can take care of everyone you bring with you.
- Teach your children how to behave around animals and what to do in case of any emergency BEFORE bringing them to the park.
-
In case of emergencies with children and dogs:
- NEVER RUN: Hide face, fold arms, and stand still. If necessary lie down, tuck arms and legs into the body, and lie still. In both cases wait for help or for the dog to leave.
- Direct eye contact (staring) is confrontational and a challenge.

We have been notified by the City of Lakewood that they plan to have the dog park closed this Wednesday, May 23rd, for installation of stone ground cover.
Keeping you and your dog safe is our top priority. The dog park will be closed at least 24 hours for this project.
Please make alternate plans for exercising your dog. During this construction project, the dog park entrance driveway and parking area will have heavy truck traffic, all gates will be open, there will be loud noise, and lots of dust during the installation and until the stone has settled.
Expect that you and your dog will get dusty from the new limestone screenings until rain has washed and settled the stone. Please use the dog park based on the health needs of you and your dog in the meantime. People using the dog park should expect that shoes and apparel and your dogs will get dusty; dress accordingly and prepare to clean off your dog and vehicles.
This date is subject to change due to weather or unforeseen circumstances. In the event of change, we will notify you as soon as we have information from the City.
You're invited!

Once they inform us of the specific date, we'll let you know. The park will be closed during this improvement process.

The City of Lakewood has informed us that they will be delivering 100 tons of gravel to the park sometime in the next 6 weeks. Expect the park to be closed for a day when the delivery takes place. We have asked the City to give us some advance warning so make sure you are on our email distribution list if you want to know about it!

On April 22 the board invites you to attend our public meeting! Dr. Rog, of Lakewood Animal Hospital, will be joining us to speak about a number of training topics and all the fun that Spring brings to pets and their owners! Just as the the "boys of summer" are warming up for the season ahead, so must dog owners prep pooches for warm weather. The Dr. will answer some important questions. When is it too early for “pee wee” puppies to play with other dogs? Why are vaccines, proper ID, and leashes important “equipment”? Is “physical conditioning” a good idea to get in shape for increased exercise? Why are hound hydration and nutrition important? What about summer grooming?
The meeting will begin at 6:00pm at the Lakewood Public Library Auditorium located at 15425 Detroit Avenue, Lakewood, Ohio 44107. Please arrive early to insure parking and seating. The auditorium is on the Lower Level. After Dr. Rog speaks, the board will hold a meeting to discuss developments at the park, upcoming events and answer questions and hear comments. We look forward to seeing old friends and meeting new friends as well. If you have a friend you would like to join, membership applications will be on hand at this meeting. The agenda can be found here.

The City of Lakewood requires dogs using the Lakewood Dog Park to be licensed. Make sure you get your license before the deadline by January 31, 2012. After the 31st, the fees double. After the January 31st deadline, Dog owners should be prepared for Lakewood Animal Control to conduct dog license checks at the Lakewood Dog Park. Here's a reminder of the Lakewood Dog Park Rules regarding dog licenses, vaccines and collars.
