Park is back open now. Repairs have been completed. Thank you for your patience!
Digger says...
The Lakewood Dog Park is anticipated to be closed on Wednesday and/or Thursday, September 28 and 29th until 5pm for the City of Lakewood for erosion repair. These closures will depend on weather and ground conditions.
Conditions are likely to be muddy for several days following repair work due to rain. Please plan your dog park trips accordingly. Also, please remember that if you show up to the park and it is closed or too muddy, the dog park is located at the trailhead of the gorgeous all purpose walking trail that winds through the Rocky River Reservation which could provide a nice alternative activity for you and your dog.
Thank you, and enjoy the park!
Posted September 27th, 2011 at 10:40amThe Friends of the Lakewood Dog Park, Inc. would like to make you aware of a recent occurrence. Recently, someone vandalized the park by stealing and/or destroying property that your membership dues and donations helped to purchase.
The Lakewood Police have been notified and a report has been filed. We are looking for any additional information about the incident or who might have been involved. The vandalism took place between Thursday evening, and Friday evening, (9/22-23). If you have any information, please contact Lakewood Police at 216-521-6773 or TopDog@LakewoodDogPark.com.
The items missing include numerous laminated signs, membership forms, incident report forms with writing utensils, sign holders, and heavy duty literature box.
Included in the vandalism was the newly installed information box and the new Incident Reports that it contained. The Incident Report listed contact information for City of Lakewood first responders. The Incident Reports were posted in the event of human or canine emergencies. Theft of this information could result in public safety issues. The Incident Reports were installed following the abandonment of dogs at the dog park and a human medical emergency resulting in EMS treatment and transport.
Also included in the vandalism were all safety warning signs. As such, we'd like to take this opportunity to remind you to take caution at the park due to the ruts formed by water erosion. The City of Lakewood Parks Department has been notified and is planning to repair the problem soon. In the mean time, please watch your step.
The top priority of the Friends of the Lakewood Dog Park, Inc. is the safety of dog park users and their dogs. Safety could be compromised by the theft and destruction of FLDP property. The membership of the FLDP bears the burden of the cost of the theft and destruction of property.
Thank you.

"Hello Dog Park friends! I have some great news to share!
- The ruts and gullies have been repaired and the PARK IS OPEN!
- The foam spraying project is completed and the PARKING LOT IS OPEN (after 5 like normal)!
- The trees have been trimmed and the trees are safe!
- The sewer project that will close the western end of the park has officially been delayed which means we should have at least a month construction free!
Digger says...
"Hi everyone. We just got word that the sewer construction project that will close the west end of the dog park is being delayed. The exact start date has yet to be determined, but they are now shooting for sometime in September. As always, Digger will keep you updated."
"In other news, the heat wave and the rain has slowed completion of the foam spraying project at the water plant. We hope they will be done soon, but until then, the regular parking lot will remain inconveniently closed."
"The erosion problems are still scheduled bo be fixed on Tuesday (and possibly Wednesday) necessitating a closure of the park to keep people and dogs safe."

"Hi all, Digger here with some good news! The City of Lakewood was quick to respond to the erosion problem at the dog park. They plan to bring in heavy equipment and materials to address the problem. The park will be closed on Tuesday, July 26, 2011 and perhaps Wednesday, July 27th. If weather and delivery of materials doesn't cooperate, that date will be changed and we'll let you know. We all know we need to keep the park safe, so thanks for everyone's cooperation! Now, Digger's off to get ready for the Bow Wow beach trip Saturday, July 23rd. Stay cool everyone!"
The park will be closed on Tuesday, July 26th, and perhaps Wednesday, July 27th
Join us for a casual group trip to Bow Wow Beach in Stow, OH. We will meet at Bow Wow Beach beginning at around 10am. Around 1pm, we will migrate to a grassy picnic area in the adjacent park and enjoy each other's company while we snack on picnic food. Please bring something to share.
Having a picnic with our dogs can be tricky, so remember to bring a leash and/or tie-out for the pups while we have our picnic. Also bring a folding chair if you have one as picnic table seating could be limited.
This event is open to everyone, but the rules of Bow Wow Beach state that children under 48" tall are not allowed in the dog area. There is a very large park with swings and a play area for children near the picnic area.
See you there!
More info about Bow Wow Beach. Bow Wow Beach is located at Silver Springs Park at 5070 Stow Road, Stow OH 44224

"Howdy Dog Park friends! MONDAY, July 18th, the dog park will be CLOSED. Our buddies at the Forestry Department have some work to finish. Hey, did you know the big sycamore tree is over 70 feet tall? Check out these pictures of guys with chain saws way up in the air."
"Good news - it looks like we are nearing the completion of this phase of construction. If the weather holds out, when the dog park opens back up on Tuesday the foam spraying work at the water plant will be completed and the parking lot back to normal!"
"That's all for now, it's kibble time for Digger! I'll check back in if there are any further updates."
Update...
Looks like the storms delayed the foam spraying project at the water treatment plant. Parking lot remains closed for at least another day (Tuesday).
Digger says,"Hello my Dog Park Friends. I would like everyone to know the Dog Park will be closed on Thursday, July 14th. Several trees at the park are dying and have become dangerous. In addition, another tree has an Emerald Ash Borer infestation. On Thursday, these trees will be removed for everyone's safety. The Friends of the Lakewood Dog Park are working with the city to determine the best options for replacing the trees and/or creating shade at the park. Thank you for your cooperation and patience during this time of change!"
p.s. It looks like we are still having some problems with our email system and some people who may have previously unsubscribed might have received the recent email announcing the above information. We apologize for the inconvenience while we try to figure out what is wrong.

We'd like to share a a nice email we received recently...
Good Morning,
Last night I spent the evening with a friend and her ill dog Olivia, at our local emergency vet clinic. While waiting I picked up the winter edition of "Modern Dog" and read about the unfortunate situation with your dog park. As a member of a group of dog owners that meet at a local park seven days a week I was struck by how similar your park seems. I was especially struck by the comments, "This is a park where people can go and talk with people that have at least one common interest. People have become friends with each other there. These people see each other on a daily basis." That describes our park exactly, I have met and become friends with a group of people I would never know otherwise. In fact the friend I was with at the clinic was someone I met at the dog park!
We both were shocked by the actions of those suing your park and hoped that the park would prevail in court, so I was very pleased this morning after googling the Lakewood Dog Park to discover that the judge had ruled in your favor. I just thought I would write and send along the best wishes and support of a fellow dog park person.
Today our dog park group has a going away party planned for one our favorite members complete with treats for dogs and humans. The biggest sorrow for the member who is leaving is leaving behind her beloved dog park (she doesn't know what her Buddy will do - he doesn't know yet) and the fact that her new hometown does not have a dog park. Olivia pulled through and is on the road to recovery, but I am afraid she will miss the party!
All the best,
-Elaine in Texas
Digger says, "Hi Dog Park friends! Looks like the construction crew will be continuing their work through the weekend. Remember to park at the marina (over the bridge) for the next couple of weeks because paint and foam over-spray could damage any vehicles parked near the dog park."

The first of two construction projects begins tomorrow at noon. They are spraying the tops of the digester tanks at the Waste Water Treatment Plant with insulating foam. They will begin by cleaning the surface with water jets, then priming the surface. Finally they will spray the foam coating on the tanks. The whole process should take 2 weeks plus any weather delays.
Due to the possibility of debris and overspray getting onto vehicles, the parking lot at the waste water treatment plant will be closed. Safe alternate parking can be found just across the bridge at the marina. From there, it is a short walk over the bridge to get to the dog park.
Please see the following 2 posters for more information, and look for signs at the park featuring "Digger" the construction dog. Please don't hesitate to email TopDog@LakewoodDogPark.com with any questions. A synopsis of the posters follows.

Congratulations everyone, we not only won the lawsuit, but we avoided an appeal as well! Thanks to Mayor Summers and our members who had a hand in negotiating and crafting the proposition that allowed us to avoid another cycle dragging through the court system. It was a difficult choice to make, but in the end, we had near unanimous show of support from our members to limit the chance of going through an appeal and potentially loosing what we have fought so hard for over the last several years by proposing a slightly later opening time on weekdays. And we were right, by opening at 8am on weekdays, Rocky River decided not to go forward with an appeal, and we have no chance of loosing our park now. We believe the change has a low impact on the park and ask everyone to keep in mind the new opening time which begins immediately. We also want to remind everyone that the same rules are still in effect that limit excessive barking, so keep up the responsibility you've shown during the lawsuit. Now that we know for sure the lawsuit will not drag out, a celebration is in the works. Look for an update soon!

From Lakewood's Press Release...
Today, Common Pleas Court Judge Carolyn B. Friedland ruled in favor of the
City of Lakewood in the Lakewood Dog Park case which was filed by the City of Rocky
River and its residents in 2007. Judge Friedland found that the dog park does not
constitute a nuisance and has denied the Plaintiff's request for an injunction.

Thanks to everyone who made this possible, especially Lakewood's Mayors FitzGerald and Summers and Lakewood's Legal staff Hurley and Claussen.
And I'd like to thank you all for being such good park patrons - we couldn't have done it without you. We must continue to be on our best behavior, and I know everyone can do it!

As promoted by Subaru, the Lakewood Dog Park would like to join in the festivities of exercising our dogs on Superbowl Sunday. Let's get out in the fresh air and allow our four-legged friends to play prior to the start of the big football game. Many of our pooches do not visit the park as often in the winter, and this would be a great way to keep them socialized and to reconnect with your two-legged friends, as well. While the park will be open during normal hours, we hope to increase our attendance between the hours of 10am and 1pm on Sunday, February 6. In addition to the fellow dog park attendees, a representative from Ganley Subaru will be at the park during these hours, and would be happy to discuss Subaru's involvement with local dog charities. We hope to see as many dogs (and people) as possible!
Additionally, in an effort to promote spending time with your dog, Gone to the Dogs Salon on Lorain Road in Fairview Park is rewarding our park visitors by offering a discounted rate on Super Bowl Sunday. On February 6, the self-service dog bath (for any size dog) will be only $12.95, with mention that you visited the Lakewood Dog Park on that day. The Fairview Park location of Gone to the Dogs will extend their Super Bowl Sunday hours to accommodate park patrons, and will remain open from 10am to 4pm.

As it happens every year, the water has been shut off to the water fountain for the winter season. This is necessary so that our pipes don't freeze and we can enjoy using the water again in the summer.
Many park users bring their own water in old milk jugs to fill water bowls. We appreciate you doing this. Please make sure you take the jugs back home with you or throw them into the garbage cans.
Bring your pup to Lakewood Park's Foster Pool for a splashing good time the day after Labor Day, Tuesday, September 7th from 5:30 to 8pm.
This is our big fundraiser for the year, and more importantly, a fun event that the dogs just LOVE!
$5.00 per dog or $8.00 for two dogs.
All proceeds go to the Friends of Lakewood Dog Park (FLDP) for maintenance and improvements to the Lakewood Dog Park.
Come dressed to get wet, bring some towels. And doggies, bring your person to the doggie event of the year and have a SPLASH!!!

A Life ranked boy scout is one step closer to becoming an Eagle Scout. He did his Eagle Scout project at the Lakewood Dog Park. The project consisted of leading other boys in the design and construction of a new bulletin board and a lost and found box in "Annie's Shelter". Thank you, Eric!
Our new video now has music. So cool!
Well, the trial is over now. All the witnesses have been called from both sides. And now we wait. Both sides have some more paperwork to submit to the court, then the Judge must make her decision. It could be several months (perhaps October or November) before we find anything out. We'll let everyone know asap as soon as we hear anything.
For a great overview of the trial, check out the article printed in the Lakewood Observer titled Lakewood Hopes Dog Park Will Sit, Stay.
Actually, we've been in the news a lot recently...

Yes, the water has now been turned-on at the dog park for the season. You no longer have to bring jugs of water from home until next Fall. Thanks to Joe Beno and the City of Lakewood for getting that turned-on for us!!
The Pizza Party Fundraiser was a great success. We had over 140 dog park fans show-up and made over $800 for the Lakewood Dog Park. Thanks to all who came, and we hope that everyone had a great time.
Check out some pictures in our photo gallery.
We'd also like to say thank you to Johnny Malloy's/Geppetto's. They did a great job hosting the event.

Ok, I lied - But you could win FREE dog park apparel if you win this year's t-shirt contest.
We are looking for a new design in 2010 for the back of our t-shirts and sweatshirts. In 2009, the slogan said...
Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.
~Roger Caras
2009
This year we are looking for a new slogan, design, or something else for the back of our apparel - Be Creative!
Just email your entry to topdog@LakewoodDogPark.com along with your name and telephone number so that we can reach you if you win. Entries must be received by the date of our pizza party fundraiser, March 27th. If we get two of the same entries, the first entry we receive will be counted, so get your entries in quickly.
The best entries will be selected and everyone will get to vote in an online poll for the winner!
We have a new webpage outlining our policies. Right now, we are starting off with one policy about how we handle complaints, but we expect the page to grow in the future.
The February edition of Paw Prints, Lakewood Dog Park's newsletter is now available to view online.
Congratulations! The proposed ordinance has passed allowing leashed dog walking in 2 Lakewood parks. This is a 12 month pilot program which will begin sometime this spring. Responsible dog owners will be allowed to try out leashed dog walking in Lakewood Park (on Lake Ave. at Belle) and in Kauffman park.
When the park thaws out, there is usually some impromptu clean up that needs done. What gets buried in the snow makes its way to the surface. Typically, this only happens once in the spring, but recently we had a mid-winter thaw and a few people got together to clean it up. The park looks great thanks to the hard work of these all stars.

The Dog Park features a spacious 2/3rd acre fenced lot bordering the Metroparks. It has a gravel surface and five majestic trees that provide shade in the summer. There are two double gated entrances, located on either end of the park, for dog safety. A water fountain is provided with a human-sized spout and a fountain, with a stainless steel bucket liner, at the right height for pups (though water is turned off during the winter season, from mid-October until May). There are 5 Dog Waste Bag stations positioned around the park and there are two pooper scooper rake/pans located near each double gated entrance. There is ample seating with 19 benches located through out the park. There is also a large information kiosk placed west of the entrance gate near the street, please check it when you visit for updates and information regarding the dog park and local events. There are now also 4 Hand Sanitizers to be found around the park.
As of April 9th, 2006, we have a small dogs play area for dogs 20 pounds and under. A fence and gate separate it from the rest of the dog park. The Small Dogs Only Play Area has it's own water bowl, toy basket, benches and shade tree. Now your small dog has a place of it's own where he/she won't feel so overwhelmed.
